Why Meta Tags Matter

Click-Through Rate (CTR)

When you share a link on Discord or Twitter, the meta tags determine the visual "card." A high-quality image and clear title can increase clicks by over 40%.

SEO Ranking

Search engines use the description tag to understand your content. While not a direct ranking factor, good descriptions lead to higher user engagement.

Proper Dimensions

For the best results, use an image ratio of 1.91:1 (1200x630 pixels). This ensures your banner isn't cropped or blurry on mobile devices.

Getting your meta tags right

Meta tags control how a page appears in search results and how it unfurls when someone shares the link. Getting them right will not make a weak page rank, but getting them wrong reliably costs you clicks on a page that already ranks.

Title and description

The title tag is the single most important on-page signal you control. Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters so it is not truncated, lead with the phrase people actually search for, and keep your brand name at the end rather than the start.

The meta description does not directly influence ranking, but it is your advertising copy in the results page. Around 140 to 160 characters works well. Write something specific about what the page offers, because a vague description invites Google to write its own from page text.

Open Graph and Twitter Cards

Open Graph tags tell Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord and most messaging apps what to display. Supply og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url at minimum. Without them, the platform guesses, and its guess is usually your navigation menu.

Images should be at least 1200 by 630 pixels for a large preview card, and must be reachable at an absolute URL. Relative paths silently fail because the scraper has no page context to resolve them against.

Twitter reads Open Graph as a fallback, so a separate full set is rarely necessary. Adding twitter:card set to summary_large_image is usually the only extra tag worth including.

One canonical per page

A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is authoritative when the same content is reachable more than one way.

Skip meta keywords

Google has ignored the keywords tag since 2009. It adds bytes and tells competitors what you are targeting.

Test before you trust

Use each platform's own debugger to see the real preview and to clear a cached bad one.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?

Roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google measures rendered pixel width rather than character count, so short words let you fit more.

Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It influences click-through rate, which matters commercially even though it is not a ranking input on its own.

Why does my shared link show the wrong image?

The platform has cached an earlier scrape. Run the URL through that platform's sharing debugger to force a refresh.

Do I need separate Twitter tags?

Usually not. Twitter falls back to Open Graph tags. Adding twitter:card is worthwhile to control the card layout.
